Riots after the Birmingham derby 01.12.2010.
Thursday, 02 December 2010 17:29

Birmingham City fans have invaded the pitch and thrown flares at rival Aston Villa supporters after their Carling Cup win.

Five people were arrested and 14 needed hospital treatment when trouble erupted, following Birmingham's 2-1 home victory over their rivals.

Flares were hurled at the away end of the St Andrew's ground and seats were ripped up and thrown back towards the pitch.

Dozens of additional police had been hired for the match, but they struggled to keep the sheer numbers of rioting fans in check.

The invasion came just hours before Fifa's decision on whether England is fit to host the 2018 World Cup.
