RIOTS: AEK Athens - Olympiakos 11.03.2015

Greek cup quarter-final abandoned due to pitch invasion!

Just two weeks ago the Greek government suspended professional football because of "crowd violence" in the derby Panathinaikos vs. Olympiakos.

In the quarter-final last night Greek supporters managed to reach the headlines of newspapers all around the world again.

Since AEK were relegated two years ago the two city rivals didn't meet for some time. And with 1-1 in the first leg of the quarter, AEK fans really started to feel the tension before the quarter-final second leg. With 65 000 tickets sold (no away fans allowed) before kick-off the Olympic Stadium was filled up with AEK supporters!

As usual there was a very nice show with pyrotechnics and the atmosphere was perfect. But in the 89th-minute Olympiakos scored the 1-0 goal and the chaos started. AEK supporters invaded the pitch and tried to attack Olympiakos players. The visiting Olympiakos player immediately left the pitch. Just over half an hour later officials announced that the game would not resume and Olympiakos will progress to the semi-finals automatically.
